Purity rings, also known as chastity or promise rings, are worn by tens of thousands of young American teens who have pledged to remain virgins until marriage.
Originating in the United States in the 1990s among Christian groups, the rings are embossed with words like "True Love Waits" or "One Life One Love" and are worn by both sexes.
The concept has increasingly entered the world of pop rock music that once was the dominion of teen rebellion, and that fact perplexed Russell Brand, the anarchic host of the MTV Music Video Awards show in Los Angeles.
"It is a little bit ungrateful because (the Jonas Brothers) could literally have sex with any woman they want, but they're just not going to do it!," Brand told the audience. "That's like Superman just deciding not to fly, but to go home on a bus."
Sparks, 18, stood up for teen heartthrobs Kevin Jonas, 20, and his brothers Joe, 19 and Nick, 16, telling a cheering audience of rock stars. Denny Pattyn, an evangelical pastor who founded the Silver Ring Thing 12 years ago, says celebrities can both help and hurt his group's quest to create a cultural shift in America where premarital abstinence becomes the rule rather than the exception.
Britney Spears once wore one and so did singer Jessica Simpson, who said she kept her pledge before her brief 2002 marriage to Nick Lachey.

"The Jonas Brothers, Jordin Sparks, Miley Cyrus -- they are doing a great job so far," Pattyn told Reuters.
Disney actresses Selina Gomez, 16, and Demi Lovato, 16, also wear purity rings.
"But when a celebrity has maybe put the ring on without the right education and inspiration and then they go out and do something crazy, then it's a reflection on us."
Pattyn said that wearing a ring is a constant reminder to stick with the promise.
"It is a commitment, like a wedding ring. It is more likely to work," he said.
The Silver Ring Thing, which runs high energy music stage shows encouraging 12-18 year-olds to take an abstinence pledge, is expanding its U.S. programs to South Africa, Brazil, Britain and Romania to meet public demand there.
Critics applaud the principle but say the problems arise when young Americans grow up, and are often ignorant of how to manage contraception and sexual health when they do decide to have sex.
"It is probably a nice thing that we have celebrities who are trying to be role models and model healthy behaviors," said Michael Reece, director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University.
"But these abstinence pledges leave people completely unprepared, once they make the decision to become sexually active, and what happens is that we have a society that is sexually illiterate," Reece told Reuters.
I don't have to wear a ring to keep myself in line. I know my boundaries, I don't need a stupid ring to tell me.
no dont have to i know when its time to stop b/c it doesnt feel right
I think its kinda dumb.
I mean, u don't need a ring 2 tell u 2 not have sex until marriege!
thats so stupid.
just cuss theres a ring on your finger, DOES NOT mean that it will stop u from having sex or somthin.
so stupid...
And P.S, most of the peeps that end up on disney channel, are the most slutiest.i mean look at miley!all those nude pics!seriusly!can u seriusly say she isn't gonna do it until shes married?uhh hell no.most of those peeps were TOLD or ORDERED 2 wear 1 for them 2 look good for disney.like a 'role model' but they should be more worred about all the nude pics, and all the bad vids of them out.then stupid stuff like that.
I wear a ring and have since i was 16!
If I was a virigin I probably would wear one, it sets a good example. It may help other virgins feel its okay not to have sex and therefore help with peer pressure issues.
I think it is simply a personal choice. Yes if you have convictions that way and wish to publically express them, and No if you do not, It is not anything more than a reminder of a commitment.
i wont wear a purity ring cuz i belong to my bf body and soul and no i wont wait till marriage to do it there is no reason why should if i know that HE IS THE ONE that i love him so as he does so purity ring means nothing to me cuz i m 16 and i plan to do it at 18 cuz althought i havent done it yet i literaly belong to my bf
Look what happened to Britney Spears guess it doesn't work for everyone. I think that decision is all mental and how much you care about your self and body. The ring doesn't have super powers. Its more of a fashion statement. Why wear it it's up to you to be responsible for you.
I'd wear one. Wouldn't change my lifestyle at all.
nah .. i dont wear one.. i think you dont have to wear a ring to say no i dont want to have sex. I mean if people wear them GREAT! but it isn't for me.. im not a jewelery type of person lol
well...i probably would have if it wasn't such a big fad now.but it's ok,i dont need a purity ring to tell me/ or remind me to not do it.its really not that hard.i've waited 17 years i think i can wait for another 7.
its a bit late for me to be wearing one =)
No, I don't wear one. I believe that sex is a natural thing, and allowing it to happen when you're ready- which for some MAY be marriage- is perfectly natural and moral. For many people, marriage is not the ideal time to wait to have sex. Sexuality is very personal, and people should be informed that expressing their unique form of sexuality is not immoral or wrong; it is actually one of the ways to be true to yourself.
So, I believe that people should be informed about abstinence. But they should also know about other things, like contraception, STD's, emotional consequences, and many other aspects of sex.
Miley Cyrus will post pictures of herself in a bikini online, or show up wearing only a blanket in a magazine, but frowns upon pre-marital sex? That doesn't seem right.
When you feel ready to be intimate with someone, you should not feel ashamed! Besides, people are marrying in their 20's, after college and getting a job. Fifty years ago people were marrying right after high school. Even before that, people would marry in their early teens! There is no reason to wait ten more years than your grandparents did.
Besides all that jibba-jabba, what about gay people? They aren't allowed to marry, so will they never be allowed to have sex? That's not fair to gay youth at all.
I agree with the part of the article that basically says waiting too long can make a person less sexually aware. Sex is not an indicator of morality, it is a natural thing, and a consequence of being human.
I do wear a purity ring because I like what it represents. For me my rings represents my promise to myself and God to stay sexually pure until marriage. I don't really care what people think about purity rings and make fun of me because I am still a virgin and almost 20. I would feel all the more special when I get married.
Nobody understands...any help please?
50 points for someone willing to do this!!!!!!!!!!?
