My current OS is windows XP Service Pack 3. I have a Biostar Tforce 550 mother board that supports 4gb of ram. I have tried putting in two sticks of 2gb ram in the slots but on my specs it shows up only as 3? So does that mean its my OS that supports only 3 gb of ram? That's what I have been told. Is there another XP out there that supports up to 8, or do I need to go Vista? I am going to update my motherboard sooner or later to get 8+gb. But I want to know right now if its my OS thats restricting 3+gb

Yes, whether you go with XP or Vista, you'll need a 64-bit version of the either OS to make full use of 4GB or more. XP SP3 update corrupts Windows registry, users claim:: on the PCs of some users who upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 3. with 2GB of RAM, I decided to downgrade to a new MacBook with 4GB RAM [more] http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticlId=9087199&intsrc=hm_listHOME | DailyTech - Microsoft Releases Vista SP1 RTM, XP SP3 RC2 to Testers:: The Windows XP SP3 RC2 update is available in five languages and weighs in at Intel C2D E6600 with 4GB RAM and an 8800GTS. http://www.dailytech.com/Microsoft+Releases+Vista+SP1+RTM+XP+SP3++Testers/article10648.htmHOME |
You are using the 32 bit version of XP which is capped at around 3.4gig of RAM (often shows as less tho) due to the length of the memory address. 32 vista is similarly capped, both vista and XP are available in 64 versions which support far far more RAM.
With XP theres is rarely a need for more than 3gig unless ur doing something special or multitasking every app known to man :p
32 bit OS's only support up to 4 GB of memory, and you'll only see about 3GB because the other 1GB of addresses is taken up by other things in your computer that have memory. Windows XP 64-bit edition is a 64-bit OS, which can address up to... well, way more memory than you will ever have, let's just say that. If you want to take advantage of all 4GB, you'll have to do get a 64bit OS.
windows XP (with the exception of 64-bit) will never use over 3 gigs of RAM (3.5 max), but with 3 gigs you'll be fine for any OS. All the RAM does is hold information while it's being processed. Since windows XP doesnt need to process that much at once, it doesnt require that much RAM. And RAM isnt a good reason to get vista.
How do i find out the properties of my processor?
Need help with hard drive?
