Why is the sky blue and the grass green?
Published by: jane 2009-01-07

  • why can't the sky be pink and grass blue that would be so cute :]

  • this is because god made it that way.

  • Because the mixture of gases in the atmosphere reflects blue light, so light coming from the sun and reflecting off the earth back into space is all let through except for the blue wavelengths, which are reflected back at us, allowing us to see a blue sky.

Grass is green because of the chlorophyll in its cells, a chemical used in photosynthesis, the process by which plants obtain the energy needed to survive.

  • Rayliegh scattering and chlorophyll

  • If you type "Why is the sky blue" into the "Search for Questions" box above, you will find that more than 4200 people have asked the question before you. Why not look at some of the answers given to those questions?

The answer is rayleigh scattering. I'll leave you to discover how it works.

  • Nicole,

The sky is blue because of a process called Raleigh scattering... sunlight coming through the atmosphere is elastically scattered by air molecules, and shorter wavelengths (of more energy) are not scattering as easily as long wavelengths. Since blue is the predominant color of short wavelength visible photons, more blue light makes it through the atmosphere and to our eyes, causing the sky to appear blue.

Grass is green because it contains the Mg bearing organic molecule chlorophyll, that transmits mostly green light.

But I would have to agree with the cuteness of a pink sky.

  • Nobody understands...any help please?
