updater() loads into parent?

I've got a west region, into which I've loaded a panel with an accordion layout. I've then loaded two panels into that panel. I'll call them subpanels.

I run Updater.update() on one of the subpanels to load some html. Here is the problem: it loads into the parent panel, wiping out the subpanels.

I think I'm seeing things. So then I update() the panel itself. It blows out the panel and loads into west region....??? Each of these seem to be loading into the parent object instead of the object itself. I can solve this by putting another panel inside of the subpanel but I must be doing something wrong.
