I was checking fares today for my sister who lives in MSP and always flies NW, and looks like UA has a cheap fare to HKG from both MSP and DTW (if there are other cities, please do post!). I was able to get a $585.55 fare including taxes. Looks like routings over NRT work best (and more miles!). Fare basis codes are KXSAL5/KWSAL5. Best thing is - 3 day minimum stay so great for a mileage run.
I'm trying to get her to buy this instead of flying on NW, but she is reluctant as she'd have to connect over Chicago then to Tokyo.
Nice find. That's a very low fare. Must be matching NW's fare sale to HK.
Going from Chicago is pretty nice. Took the trip couple times and they fly over the north pole. I think the flight is 14 hours or so from ORD.
I don't think NW fly from MSP to HKG direct anymore. So your sister's choice would be stopover in DTW/NRT, or ORD. Correct if I'm wrong.
