UA - MR to SYD/MEL with new E-Fare
Published by: smith 2009-01-08

  • My first find and it took absolutely no skill...

United's new E-Fare from IAD to SYD/MEL leaving Thursday (to spend a day in town) or Friday 02/03 March coming back Sunday 05 March as a 1K/1P with the triple miles nets:

    82444 RDMs for $1029 all-in.
That comes out to about 1.24cents per RDM as long as the fare qualifies for the Triple Miles promo (and I thought all published fares did...so it should be good).

Not a bad deal, but that would be an absolutely insane MR - ESPECIALLY in Y!!!

    -jeremy

  • Could you not get E+ being 1K/1P/*G?

  • Could you not get E+ being 1K/1P/*G?
E+ is still Y ... that's a long trip, esp from east coast.

  • DO Tripel Miles also apply to 1Ps?

I've had trouble gettign an answer to this question...

    Do we have to register?
Triple miles is a "gimme" by UA for a promo last year for people that flew X # of EQMS based on their status at a certain point in the year. It required registration last year when it was offered. If you haven't received an email, it's likely you're not eligible (but YMMV on that one).

  • [QUOTE=Pat89339]I did this MR last February (although it cost about $200 less than this year's price). I would highly recommend a 2 day layover there for recovery purposes. My flight was 100% in Y and with the reduced award level to 45,000 miles that UA is currently offering, it looks like they are trying to pack the plane to the gills.

WHERE ARE YOU SEEING AWARD SEATS AT 45 OOO ON UA TO AUS PLS

    Read this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=521795)

Flyertalkers have reported being able to book this over the phone.

  • wow...mardi gras in sydney is that crazy? i mean, i have the money to burn but can't do it because of work. talk about a cheap fare to go to SYD, which i believe is one of the best cities in the world.

  • it's ridiculous to think it nets 82,000 miles. that's just wrong. absolutely. crazy. nuts!

Depending on the class you ended up with, you may not have added the latest 5,000 bonus for australia trips

  • I just flew back in LAX from SYD today (UA826). The plane was about 1/3 full and I had four seats to myself! They also enforced the E-/E+ rule.

On the way to SYD Wednesday night on UA839, they were letting E- passengers move in the E+ section. Some in E+ were visibly agitated because E+ was only 1/2 full while E- was packed.

  • i was trying to be tongue in cheek. thinking kmf actually got an even better deal than he thought.

the promo fare however appears to be booked at k class and probably doesnt qualify for the extra 5000 miles.

by the way, sin fares are about the same and offer slightly more miles. my was-lax-nrt-hkg-sin-nrt-lax-iad was roughly the same price before a discount earned with the dc promo

  • Did anyone else get the orbitz promo for 15% off UA international flights sent out today. It works on the SYD-MEL fares bring then to about $930 or so (all in).

Edit: I just checked and it is $915 all in from IAD.

  • by the way, sin fares are about the same and offer slightly more miles. my was-lax-nrt-hkg-sin-nrt-lax-iad was roughly the same price before a discount earned with the dc promo

Isn't there a minimum stay required with the SIN fare?

With the SYD/MEL promotion you could actually fly it three times from the west coast if one were so inclined and had the stamina. Out 3/1 returning 3/3; out 3/3 returning 3/5; out 3/6 returning whatever remaining date through the promotion. If you were triple miles eligible, that'd be a whole lot of miles. However, after flying like that you may not want to set foot on a plane again in a very long time.

  • I live in HNL and noticed you base some of your flights from HNL. I was wondering if you were able to think up something good from HNL with this SYD fare (or anything else for that matter).

Foady is right, this fare does not work from HNL. You would have to go to the Mainland to get it. If you could find a good east coast fare from HNL and then nest the SYD fare in it (paying attention to minimum stay requirements), you could get a lot of miles. Maybe try the DFW fare that is mentioned in another thread and see what the SYD fare is from there?

  • No luck for ORD to SYD on 03/16/06 (or few days after), returning 03/23/06 (or few days after). Comes up to about $13xx, even on Orbitz.

I thought I saw it for $993 but I think I accidentally had it on February instead of March.

I was looking for pretty much the same dates, but was getting $12xx lowest.

  • I just pulled up MSP-DEN-SFO-SYD-SFO-DEN-MSP for 989 all in. Not bad, if you are heading down under.

  • something is wrong with ual.bomb. if you try to find iad-syd or iad-mel, it only returns results for iad-sfo-iad.

Could you provide some details on how you found this fare. thanks.

i just pulled it up on ual.com and it shows the complete itinerary for $1029.00 if you want to go to sydney for say...7 hours

  • Yes, there are visions of miles dancing in people's heads but in coach? I did it in business and I was tired and I spent 11 nights in Aus....I'd be catatonic in coach. You are stronger people then I am and I salute you...

My motto is: When you enter a plane, never turn right! Doesn't work on 737's as you would then end up in the cockpit. Works good on others though....

    Cheers

  • it's ridiculous to think it nets 82,000 miles. that's just wrong. absolutely. crazy. nuts!
Why? I'm having trouble seeing whether you are being sarcastic or serious...

  • make sure e-fares actually qualify for triple miles..

regular fares do, I am sure but not sure about e-fares/

  • make sure e-fares actually qualify for triple miles..

Thats what I was thinking too. At the bottom of the e-fares page where it lists all the specials for this week it says this (bolding mine)

International , Domestic and E-Fares Specials before you buy. E-Fares are not eligible for online booking bonus miles. Only standard Mileage Plus flight miles will be earned upon completion of an E-Fares flight.

I would say to call and check before booking.

Exact dates that I wanted ... post if you find something. (I'm flying from the DC area).

  • Hi -- I'm looking to go from ORD to SYD on 18 March and return on 26 March (give or take a day). The price was $1080 when I checked last week (K Class), but now it's sky-rockted to $13xx.

Anyone know how I can save up some money for a nice trip? Cheers!

  • There doesn't seem to be any indication that the triple miles wont work. It also seems like the 3X is in addition to the 1X you get for flying (plus any status bonus).. so technically IAD-MEL-IAD could be 20K+60K for a total of 80K (rounding to 20K roundtrip) plus 100% (20K) bonus = 100K. (don't forget to add the 5K if you decide to get a Q,V,W fare)

    From the promo site-
    "Triple Miles Terms and Conditions
Triple Miles Terms and Conditions Offer valid for travel between March 1, 2006 and March 31, 2006. Tickets purchased in the U.S. through United reservation offices are $10 per ticket higher and tickets purchased at airport ticket counters are $15 per ticket higher. Offer is combinable with other combinable offers. Offer may be earned an unlimited number of times. Offer valid on all paid, qualifying, published fares. Not valid on government fares. No roundtrip required. Valid only on flights operated by United, United Express and Ted, and not valid on United-marketed code-share flights operated by other carriers. Must be a Mileage Plus member to participate in the offer. Flights must be credited to the Mileage Plus account in order to qualify. Triple flight miles in this offer are defined as three times the actual flight miles flown on United, United Express and Ted. Triple miles apply to base flight miles only and do not count toward elite status. Triple miles are in addition to any applicable elite and class-of-service bonuses. Offer subject to change without notice. Other restrictions may apply. Miles accrued, awards issued and bonus offers are subject to the rules of the United Mileage Plus program. Triple miles will be deposited six to eight weeks upon completion of qualifying travel. The Mileage Plus Program, including accruals, awards and bonus miles offers, is subject to change without notice. Taxes and fees related to award travel are the responsibility of the passenger. United and Mileage Plus are registered service marks. For complete details about the Mileage Plus program, visit "

  • i stated in the actual thread about this. you have to call united.com web support and give them the link so they can transfer you to get this ticketed. I have mine on hold, but am unsure if i can actually take this trip.

Some extra info.. Another thread already has determined with MP CSR that UA has decided 25th anniv double promo will turn "off" in favor of the triple promo for those who qualified. We won't get both, nor will the double promo "supercede" (like it sorta reads in the TCs ) the triple promo.

I think I'll take the $1200 savings (K class vs Q class) over getting an extra 5K miles! ;)

*sigh* Didn't get the Orbitz e-mail. Wow. That would've been killer.

  • Nope, it would be 80K total, as the 100% bonus is already included in that figure. It is a total of four times miles.

I'm sorry I meant another 20K status bonus. .. so you are saying that technically it is 1X (for flying) + 1X( for status) + 2X for the promo. That seems a little deceptive by UA.

  • There was a question on if this qualifies for the Triple Miles bonus. Someone posted a quote, purportedly from the UAL website.... indicating not. However, I wasn't able to find the "bolded" comment when I look at the e-fares rules on UAL website, clicking the links at page bottom.

Did anyone confirm that these fares qualify for March Triple Miles?

Also, might want to get an online visa before showing up at the airport.

I've no idea whether one can get one at the last minute, at the desk?

  • pat, you're right. i forgot about the minimum. i've turned it into a trip and the number of days werent a factor for my trip

  • You should be aware that the first weekend of March is Mardi Gras in Sydney. Which can be a good excuse to stay awake, but probably means that upgrades (including mine), will not clear if you are using Systemwides.

Also, hotels are not too full it seems, but fairly pricey.

You might want to go later in the month.

For the visa, just call UA before your flight and have your passport handy - it's quick and simple. Don't know about the 3x promo.

Headed down that way for Mardi Gras 3/1-3/6. I'm counting on my upgrade to clear using SWUs booked in V. The loads are actually quite light from LAX unless I'm sitting on some false sense of security here. Now you got me a lil' worried

  • I just pulled up MSP-DEN-SFO-SYD-SFO-DEN-MSP for 989 all in. Not bad, if you are heading down under.

There's no non-stop from MSP to SFO or LAX. If you're after some extra miles, you could attempt MSP - ORD - SFO/LAX.

  • Well, well - do I spend a $1000 I don't have and fly to SYD for a weekend? Sigh!

  • I just pulled up MSP-DEN-SFO-SYD-SFO-DEN-MSP for 989 all in. Not bad, if you are heading down under.

E-Fare? Dates? Where did you find this?

  • done, booked, and i'm going to write a book about sitting in e- for 38 hours!!!

  • Just saw more K fares, I was searching Feb 24-March 6 - SEA-SYD - $939 all in...

  • This is really, really tempting, but the idea of two days in coach brings nothing short of goosebumps to me.

So, I can either swallow this and get 80K, find an alternative, or beg the matron at the gate to accept my SWU!

  • No email coupon needed - Click on your flight selection and Orbitz automatically applies the 15% coupon! ORD - SYD $874 All-In!

  • I live in HNL and noticed you base some of your flights from HNL. I was wondering if you were able to think up something good from HNL with this SYD fare (or anything else for that matter).

HNL is not exactly the best exit city for MRs. Best you can do about now is take a trip to the east coast and back for ~$600.

Getting to SYD from HNL on UA metal requires routing through either SFO or LAX. And unless I'm doing something wrong in my fare searches, going back to the mainland then going down under kills the fares. :(

I second the MG celebration recommendation in Sydney. Straight, gay, questioning, whatever... it's a blast!

  • 100% (20K) bonus = 100K.

Nope, it would be 80K total, as the 100% bonus is already included in that figure. It is a total of four times miles.

  • Booked SEA-LAX-MEL-LAX-SEA 3-Mar, returning 6-Mar, same dates the original poster suggested. 72K miles (after all bonuses, if I read all the rules right) + 17K EQM, $925.

UAL Australia 4-day Special deal was extended to 14-Feb.

While the original 4-day didn't come up with seats for SAT/SUN... I checked and now they are showing up for Saturday/Sunday travel. No minimum stay... need to travel outbound by the 6th March.. and return by the 27th.

As the original poster indicated, it's actually possible to do this leaving Friday night the 4th, and come back Sunday the 6th, giving 2 whole hours to enjoy in Melbourne Airport, and using no weekdays. And that fare was even cheaper... $880. ( and probably an SSSS on your boarding pass as an added bonus )

But then one would miss beautiful Melbourne. Couldn't bring myself to do that.

  • The K class fare was only available for about a week or so I think, I snatched one up for Feb 24-March9, $1014 all in.

For those getting the Y e-fare, isn't that upgradable to C with miles?

  • I did this MR last February (although it cost about $200 less than this year's price). I would highly recommend a 2 day layover there for recovery purposes. My flight was 100% in Y and with the reduced award level to 45,000 miles that UA is currently offering, it looks like they are trying to pack the plane to the gills.

Needless to say, I am also looking at this for a MR.

  • DO Tripel Miles also apply to 1Ps?

I've had trouble gettign an answer to this question...

    Do we have to register?

  • Nope, it would be 80K total, as the 100% bonus is already included in that figure. It is a total of four times miles.

yep.. UAL made sure in their wording this year to avoid the confusion of 1x+3x+1x.

However, be careful as some of the newer Promotions "may not be combined"... and in one case, it actually says that the Promotion would take precedence over any other promotion... which could result in lower miles than one could've gotten!

There are *some* additional bonus miles: about 6K. ( 1K online book, 1K online check-in and anniversary bonus, 4K in 500miler upgrade certs ).... so it's really about 86K.

Not a bad deal... really good price to Australia *AND* you get almost enough miles to fly a free business class the next time you go to Australia ( if you can get a seat! ).

  • Although travelocity doesnt seem to allow weekend travel at this rate, UA.com does.

Anyone know of any similar ($1000 all in) offer to MEL from IAD for later in March? ... obviously preferred in UA.

  • Nobody understands...any help please?
50 points for someone willing to do this!!!!!!!!!!?
