Types of Horse boots and wraps?
Published by: rose 2009-01-08

  • I was hoping for a list of all the different types of boots and wraps and what they are used for... (ex. splint boots, bell boots, polo's)
And what kind of boots or wraps are good for what types of events, use? (ex. training, barrel racing, jumping).

  • BOOTS:
Open Front Boots: These protect the tendons of the horse while leaving the front of their forelegs exposed. They're used by showjumpers primarily since they protect the soft tissue of the horse's legs while allowing him to feel it if he raps a rail, thus encouraging him to jump up higher at the next fence. They can be made of hard plastic or leather, and many have fleece or sheepskin lining for comfort. Equitation riders often ride in these, too.

Splint Boots: These are usually soft, neoprene boots. They protect the legs from brushing together, and are useful in horses who tend to clip their legs as they trot or canter. They're very flexible and don't offer suitable protection for jumping disciplines. Many horses wear them on trails or in turn-out for basic protection against scrapes.

Bell Boots (also called Overreach Boots): These are worn around the hoof and prevent the horse from clipping the back of his fetlock with his hind legs. Horses with an overreaching step or horses that practice long extensions are prone to pulling their front shoes or cutting their legs if they step on themselves. They're primarily worn by horses with a pronounced overreach, though many jumpers also wear them for protection.

Back Legs Boots/bandages? - HorseCity Bulletin Boards::

Ankle Boots: Worn on the hind legs, these prevent the legs from brushing together (like splint boots, but for the back). Many jumpers wear them because the tight turns and turns on the haunches can cause brushing. They also offer moderate protection if a horse rubs a rail with his hind legs.

All-Around Boots: Dover makes a Sport Boot like these. They're usually basic boots, sometimes leather or neoprene with sheepskin or neoprene lining. They protect the legs from cuts, scrapes, brushing, etc. They're not seen in the show ring too much, but they're great for schooling.

Sport Medicine Boots: The SMB boots are made mostly for barrel racers and reiners. I don't see many English hunt seat riders using them except for turn-out or trail They protect the horse's legs all the way around, similarly to a polo wrap.

    WRAPS:
Polo Wraps: These are used primarily for schooling. They protect the horse from brushing, scrapes, cuts, and rubs. They also provide support on take-off and landing from jumps. I school all my horses, hunters, jumpers, and eq, in polos.

Pillow Wraps: Used after a work-out, pillows are thick bandages that are used in conjunction with liniment, alcohol, or poultice. They provide support after strenuous workouts.

Standing Wraps: Used to keep the pillows secure and in place.

Remember, boots or wraps of any kind are not allowed in hunter competitions.

  • I get mine from this sight I like them and they work well

  • Well..

Splint Boots are used to help protect the splint bone from side-sweeping and impact
Bell Boots protect the back of the front hooves (heel) from back feet if the horse over-reaches with them
Polo's can be used as exercise wraps, used over quilted wraps as stable bandages or shipping wraps

Umm I barrel race and I use Professional's Choice SMB Elite Boots on all four legs...they help cushion the negative impact from the hoof hitting the ground and also protect against cross-firing hooves and the barrels if the horse should knock one down and hit it with their leg...

I also use my SMB Elite's for training...I have a 3 yr old who is going to be a barrel horse...but right now he is learning how to be a calm, collected western pleasure mount so he can learn body control and many other important aspects of being a barrel horse...so to protect his legs I use the boots...

  • I have always had good luck with Professionals Choice and I just got the Elites in a 4 pack and live them! I got the lime ones with purple straps and I always get comment on how awesome they are! Pro. Choice no turn bell boots are good too! :)

  • Bell boots are designed to protect a horse if it should strike one front leg

Splint boots -Provides protection to the tendon area.
For Younger Horses mostly in early training

Polo wraps are used while riding, most commonly on dressage horses or while schooling show hunters or show jumpers.
