Today from Business Traveller :"Northwest and Continental have made a change to their Worldperks/Onepass mileage upgrades to business class from coach excursion fares on transatlantic routes. Previously, you could redeem miles to upgrade from any published fare. But with winter sale fares between Seattle and Europe plunging to as low as $400 round-trip, Northwest and Continental are now prohibiting mileage upgrades on these lowest fares."
Now I knew UAL was part of the gang (no upgrades on lowest fares) but LH is not.
Can anyone tell us who else among major airlines flying from/to the US is like LH ?

havane: Rudy just asked Rudi to answer your question:
only LH-vouchers (from LH's miles&more-program) let you upgrade on any LH-flights including 'W' fares since oct-17-1998 (must be LH-flight-number and LH as carrier). CheapOair Consumer Reviews, Customer Testimonials, CheapOair Feedback:: I thought our corporate travel agency always found us the lowest fares, Not only was I able to upgrade on the trans-atlantic flights to Business Class, http://www.cheapoair.com/travel/travel_resources/clienttestimonials.aspHOME | Money Saving Advice on clarkhoward.com:: Apr 18, 2008 The bellwether here is Southwest Airlines, which has great fares on travel up until Northwest got the worst scores in all categories, http://clarkhoward.com/liveweb/shownotes/category/10/104/HOME |
Unfortunately for you UA doesn't allow those upgrades on LH's 'W'-fares (the reason is, that UA doesn't want to favor their ff to book LH instead of UA).
Psssssst: a 'good friend of mine' sometimes has been able to confirm an upgrade in advance, indicating that he will use a LH-upgrade-voucher (LH-flight-#, LH = carrier, 'W'-fare) and at check-in he 'delivered' a UA-upgrade-voucher good for 'selected fares with LH for a one-way transatlantic flight'.
My good friend sometimes improved his success-rate by already getting upgraded boarding passes for later segments, when he did an early check-in for a connecting flight with another *Alliance-carrier as TG, AC, AN or NZ (the computer had the upgrade already as confirmed with seat-assignment ...) or even with a Swissair connecting flight from Zurich to Germany (Swissport = SR's employees, not LH-people, handle the combined *Alliance check-in-counter at Zurich's terminal 'B' and there is nowhere anybody from UA they could ask for advice ...).

You can upgrade any fare on DL using old miles, but new SkyMiles can only be used to upgrade M, B, and Y fares I believe.
One of the reasons that I moved my business to AA from DL was that AA allows you to upgrade from even the cheapest fare.
I once upgraded a $279 internet fare from LAX to LHR (fly out on thursday, fly back on tuesday)! I was surprised when the AAdvantage person informed me that I COULD upgrade, and I would earn miles! On my flight, there were 6 of us who had upgraded on the internet fares, because I saw the same people on my flight home four days later.
DL makes you pay an absurd "upgradeable" fare which is usually about $500 dollars more than the lowest economy fare.
I just upgraded an LAX-LHR (via ORD)/LGW-LAX (via DFW)flight for beginning of December which cost only $518, including taxes! IMHO, $518 and 50K miles is a fantastic price for flying the new 777 from LGW to DFW.

no aa does not give them, but if the fares are too low on dl to use them, then what good do they actually do? i usually use them only around xmas(my gift to myself), as the back of the plane is way too crowded, so the higher fare is more than justified.
still, i like the anyfare upgrade rule on aa. i have done this numerous times over the years since internet fares began, and i have even gotten class of service bonus miles after upgrading. it's absolutely essential when flying to south america. 10 1/2 hrs to eze. whew!

I think one can still upgrade on any fare with Delta Airlines, Swissair, Sabena and currently Austrian using Qualiflier points.
And onedog, they will have 777's on the LAX-LHR nonstop starting in March!
This is nothing new on Continental. They've disallowed upgrades on the lower fares in the past.

When looking to upgrade using a low fare, ask the airline what is the lowest fare allowable for upgrades. I was booking a trip to Paris that had a discounted (un-upgradable) fare of $524. When I asked what would be need to use upgrade miles I was told a fare of $574! So sometimes it is not as expensive as first thought,
yes - Celestar (and james) are correct - as long as you use Qualiflyer miles.
Trick question guys - you're right about SkyMiles, but he said 'using Qualiflyer points'.

One Dog:
Although I also do not like DL's intl. upgrade rules - pnly on M fares or above. At least, elites do not have to use miles if they have enough systemwides. I do not think AA gives out these certs. Do they??
AA still allows an upgrade on any fare, but they raised it earlier this year from 40k to 50k points. You can also do a one-way upgrade with AA.
On DL????? I don't know about this. Is this true?
Well, well, well... Just called UA about the LH upgrade vouchers using UA miles that Rudi mentioned extensively on the board. Looks like only B and H fares are allowed now !. I called back 3 times UA about this and got 3 times same answer. Call LH and got same answer. Anyone can confirm this ? Rudi ?
