The threads that were closed were simply due to someone reporting them and BLUE 2002 might have hit that one on the nail.
RP has always maintained that personally naming people is the most serious violation of his TOS.
My suggestion is that these threads can continue, as, in reality they are fun but "3rd party" use of names should be used to save the purity of heart here from sending PM's to mods and whining about TOS. Names like "OP" or "the upgrade person on AC 869" etc might have less lock and key attributes here. In effect some of our self policing has apparently become "internal moderating".
Maybe someone is angling for a mod job and trying to impress the power that be.
Since we don't formally have mods and do self police for the most part we will also have those who think they are moral majority and will notify mods of any little thing, which, if truly a TOS violation even minor will get the post pulled or the thread closed down. Sending an SOS to a mod to close down a purely nasty thread is something some of us have done, but this recent stuff is childish.
The mod who closed one of the threads referred to not "policing" AC threads normally. That statement really makes me angry. The mods are not there to be cops but that is how they view themselves. Like its time to issue the next ticket.
Think of them not as moderators, but as "big brothers" to S9, there to protect him and make sure he can continue to create and hi-jack threads with meaningless nonsense. What I dont get is that he was given that bizarre time-out - where all posts were invisible to everyone, yet clearly not one single thing has changed.
Mine may not be a popular point of view, but I personally did not have much use for the threads that were closed. We are a forum of FF talking about FF issues and the grammatical abilities of other members is not an FF issue. We talk about self moderation, but when boredom incites a need to be little others, self moderation is obviously not working.
Guilty as charged, but with an explanation of sorts. You see, until now I have actually been known to chastise people for ganging up on a certain FT member (who shall remain anonymous). Finally something snapped and I decided to go on a bit of a posting rampage. Am I proud of it? No, I am not. Was it to some extent gratifying and fulfilling? Well, it helped me off-load quite a bit of frustration brought on by the perpetual dilution and decline of this forum's quality of content, a significant portion of this dilution and decline being attributable to a certain member and/or members (who shall also remain anonymous). State Threads Library Reference:: After being called any thread switch will call the callback. (e.g., a closed file descriptor may be reused without other threads knowing that) http://state-threads.sourceforge.net/docs/reference.htmlHOME |
Are grammatical abilities an FF issue? I would like to think that, just like in face-to-face conversations, exchange of ideas in writing (even on an internet forum) should be subject to some standards of quality. You wrote your post using full sentences; I am also making an effort to respond with some level of quality. My bet is that if I communicated back in grunts and monosylables only, you would not be inclined to carry a conversation with me (be it on-line or over a beer). Well, you may still not be inclined, but at least for different reasons ;)
Did I belittle somebody? I would say that an almost total inability (or, as I suspect, unwillingness) to apply even the lowest standards of quality to ones communications is belittling enough, to oneself, to one's Alma Mater, to one's family... Oh, and just to clarify, English is my second language. I am not suggesting here that we ostricize well-meaning people, who simply have not had the chance yet to pick up on all the subtleties of their second (or third, or fourth) language. That, to my best knowledge, is not the context of this discussion. I am, however, somewhat allergic to what can be perhaps described as "systematic sloppiness".
Last, but not least, I am most guilty of not using the Ignore feature of FT. I know I should, but... everybody loves a train wreck. ;)
Beter get a new spell checker or an update :D
Talking about updates, with all the useless enhancements added to FT over the years [I have yet to figure most of them out, nor what the stupid green dot in the lower left hand corner of my ID box means!], the one thing we could really use is an onboard Spell Check utility, or at least the ability to use our own "tools" version thereof. But I suspect this is one of the last things engineers ever think about adding, since most of those folks who design software never had much of an aptitude for English.
Back on track, I must admit there are some pretty useless threads started that then meander off into childishness. To me these are the web equivilent of a patch of weeds on the side of a road: sure, one can tidy things up and cut them down, or let them stay and perhaps proliferate along the entire stretch of the road. Sure, one doesn't have to read them, but at least an initial visit tends to be required to figure this out. And with the slowness of FT on some days, this lost time adds up.

Although we might find this one individual’s posts immature and lacking substance, many on the AC board continue to egg him on. All the new topic titles pertaining to him will only feed his self-importance or pomposity.
It is blatantly obvious this particular person relishes the attention he can get from you and doesn’t care if it is positive or negative feedback. Perhaps the best solution is to not let him bait you. Don’t respond to a post that is obviously ridiculous.
Well said and agree 100%. ^

OT to the thread, but I can answer that! Green dot means you (or another FT'er) is online. Grey means offline.
Looks like a moderator wants to take up residence on the AC forum. :(
There are a number of closed threads.
Where have you been for the last year? ;)

Threads getting closed and the resulting comments seems a bit of overkill to me- particularly without understanding the context etc. The comments regarding policing of the board also seemed very strange- perhaps I missed something but my understanding was we had already voted NOT to have a moderator?
Oh good, not another post by the guy who makes fun of socialists and conservatives at the same time and I don't know where he is on the political spectrum ;)
Are you trying to compete with the FT'er otherwise known as AC869 for clarity. ;)
You in the wrong thread, AB? :D
Yup...
Where have you been for the last year? ;)
My butt has seen way too many aircraft seats. ;)
I am aware of this incursions of the mods into the AC forum :td:

I've been reprimanded in the past for making a reference to spelling and grammar on these boards, but continue to believe that these are important to the quality and relevance of users' posts. In many cases, and one in particular, posts are quite literally unintelligible, and do nothing but confuse the reader. I completely appreciate that it's not appropriate to make off-kilter remarks about posts by members for whom english is a second language, but for some there seems to be no effort made to improve the quality, relevance or readability of posts. #75 (Support multiple (green) threads inside PyMite)PyMite:: Ticket #75 (Closed: fixed) Support multiple (green) threads inside PyMite. The idea of strangers coming into the forum and shutting down threads makes my skin crawl. I am particularly incensed when the action comes from those who see fit to call themselves "super moderators" when the mood strikes, because I view that as a failure of a different sort. However I cannot disagree with the closing of the threads because they were immature, and unfair, given the individual was not even here to defend himself.
If we are to self moderate, we need to start now!

[QUOTE]Micro managment does not work in business and it will not work on a public board like this one. (Wannabe mods take note)
I think we have a wannabe mod in our midst who uses the AC board to showcase his "mod" talents by reporting stuff to the mod squad.
In my opinion self moderation should mean that our community at large should not contribute to threads which attack a person's shortcomings.
You mean like looking over the urinal stall at the next guy and laughing.....that kind of shortcoming?? :D
To even comment in and offensive thread is only adding fuel to the fire.
Something a lot of us are guilty of but we don't use hight test fuel ;)
duplicate... My apologies.

You in the wrong thread, AB? :D
If you do the crime you have to be prepared to do the time.
If you break the FT TOS, you have to be prepared to have threads closed or be suspended, no matter what the subject matter.
I was wanting to respond to FatBoy's post in regards to "The quality of threads and posts on the AC forum" .... but can't find it.
So, I will add it to Parnel's posting...
Some people need to be the center of attention at any cost. They don’t see or won’t see that they are behaving in an exasperating manner to the majority on this forum.

There’s no use in complaining about him getting evangelist status if we have put him there by constantly adding to the drivel.
Poisonally I always try too chek my posts through this web site befor positing:

You mean that you are one of those "stall" guys :D
The latest Google Toolbar has a spell check for online forms. It works with FT and saves a lot of cutting and pasting from word if you're writing a long post or re-editing those pesky typo's you only ever seem to notice after you've submitted.

T nor what the stupid green dot in the lower left hand corner of my ID box means!
It means you are online... and yes I know you know when you are online ... but it lets others know too. I do not know if the "use invisible mode" in your options turns that off or not.

When I talk about self moderation, I am not referring to the moment of passion you speak about, or the odd post. We are all human and there are days when stuff happens!
