On a recent flight YYZ-DFW, I noticed a new seating config in J on 319s. They have taken space away from the galley to creat 2 new J seats, but also taken away a whole row at the back of J. Net result is less J/C seats on these planes. I suspect this will appear on other planes as well. Less J, more Y. As for the less galley space, the meal service is not impressive on these DFW flights anyway (cold small meal only in J), somthing that hopefully will change soon!!!

  • Out of all those short haul planes, I actually like those 737 J seats the most. Quite comfortable compared to the A319/A320. [Dunno about the A321, never been on one but haven't heard much good things about it]

  • This is really too bad. The A319 used to be my favorite short/medium haul plane. I guess I'll have to find a new one http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

At least it looks like I won't be flying much in the next 6 months! Hopefully the airline can improve itself in the meantime.

ACDUDE, I bow down to your obviously superior AC knowledge. I have been aboard 2 (of the now 4?) A321's and I assumed they all had the new J seat. You know what they say happens when you assume...

Let me take a stab at Empress' question... I believe the A340's that are at the end of their leases are FINs 981 and 982, which (I believe) are the property of ILFC and (I believe) are slated to be leased to Air Jamaica next...

As for the VOD 340's, I flew on FIN 910 HNL-SYD in Feb and it had the new seats with VOD, so there will be at least one remaining in the fleet http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And FWIW, although I like the new J A321 seat, I was aboard FIN 451 two days ago at YYZ and man, it looked tired. Say what you will about the old seat upholstery, that new bright green fabric makes it hard to hide the inevitable chocolate or red wine stains...

Hopefully I will find out on WED when I go to NRT if they still have OD video. As far as A340-500 goes I think it's gonna be worth waiting for. It's been confirmed internally so many times that it will have beds in J and most likely it will start by doing YYZ-HKG. AC relized that they need this kind of product to compete and while other airlines have been doing this in past couple of years AC had problems of its own. Other airlines were getting new products but AC on the other hand was busy painting CP planes, integrated all the aspects of 2 different airlines and therefore lack of new products. With the delivery of the new A340-500 in Nov & Dec, the new J class product should be starting to develop in the rest of the fleet by the end of 2003 IMO.

  • Shareholder: Yes, the European airlines have always had a very modified version of J class, but North American routes are so much longer to justify a better level of comfort and service. There is a big difference between a 2 hr flight and a 4 hour one, so lets just hope that NA carriers like AC maintain a real J class and never a European style one!!! Frankly IMO they are not worth the bucks for an upgrade!

  • Shareholder... did you notice whether people were getting upgrades on any of those star European flights?

I am off to Europe in a weeks time and was wondering if upgrades are possible with an Air Pass and "H" class tickets?

ACDUDE, I just found out that the 2 A340s with the OD video is FIN 909 & 910. So I am sure either YYZC2 or you can find out whether those 2 birds are still with AC.

Really looking forward to those new J seats and glad to hear that they are being introduced on the HKG route first!

  • You're right... 908 is gone. 981 & 982 is leaving soon. Seems like 909 & 910 is still around though. Good news.

Apparently they rated very highly with some focus groups or something.

    not all true...

    A319 FIN 289, 290, 291
    A320 FIN 235

Still have the original configuration (16J 96Y & 24J 108Y) and different kind of seats inside. The new design is much better and they have foot rests in J that will extend which in my opinion is better then on Dom 767 J class.

Also as far as I know FIN 451 & 452 on A321 are the only ones that have "the new" green seats. They chose the color after doing a study with some focus group that concluded that the color makes the interiour look wider and not much of a tube. I guess it works with passangers and gives them more of a relaxed atmosphere...

Some of the new A321 have redone CP J class seats put in them because AC saved close to $1M by doing this.

  • I like the 321 Y seats, mostly because when they recline, they slide forward and the guy in front of me does not drop his seatback into my newspaper, just shortens his own kneeroom.

Is JM (Air Jamaica) getting more A340s from AC? I thought the final two of two was already delivered in Feb./ Mar. of this year for their KIN/MBJ-LHR and KIN/MBJ-MAN routes.

  • Noticed flying on four different STAR European partners that all have reduced the size of their Business Class cabins. While most have always had moveable partitions, and used a variant of 3 by 3 seat that can convert into 2 by 2, they are now standardizing the front cabin on domestic and intra-European routes with far fewer rows than in the past. LH's new 321s have a fixed C cabin, as does OS's 320 fleet. This is a realistic response to the reduction in revenue front cabin travel, which of course AC began even before 9.11.

  • On a related note, does anyone know whether the 2 A340s with the on demand video is still around? AC returned some A340s lately and I believe at least one of them is the one with the OD video. • Commrade Milton, we like your seats - will you put them on all the flights to Cuba, or will we still have to sit on the sacks of grain?

  • I think #908 has been sent back to the leasors already.

909 and 910 should still be around.

  • I knew there was something wrong when 4AC is missing on PTO for every single A319 flight. So I guess we can now classify the A319 as having the "enhanced less space" elite seating in Y similar to the A320!

  • Just looked at the Y seat map for the new configuration. There are now 2 more rows in Y. But unlike the A320 reconfiguration, they moved the exit row from row 15 to the middle of row 16, and removed seats 16 A & F to provide access, similar to row 9 on the 737. That keeps the number of seats down to 120 so only 3 FAs are required.

Since they really only added 1.5 rows in front of the exit window (rather than 2 on the A320), it appears that they did not steal legroom from the premium seating section. Instead, some seats behind the exit row will now have less space. Also, seats 17 A & F have no seat in front of them and are now the best seats on the entire plane.

In fact I think we have a new monster maybe this aircraft should be called the Green Elvis as it is the most horid thing I have ever had to sit in, thank god I was only on it for YUL-LGA.

Of course these seats are "reserved" for the once a year flier who checks in 4 hours before departure as they cannot be pre-assigned to Elites - arghhh.

  • Nobody understands...any help please?
