I'd like to get a sense of whether it's worth waiting for Y award space (using United miles) to come through on Air New Zealand, specifically for the nonstop SFO to AKL flight on February 7. Does NZ typically release Y award space within days of departure, if so at what time window typically?

United says no NZ overwater award space available via any route for February 7 or 8. In any event, my mother only wants the SFO-AKL nonstop those dates, in preference to SFO-UA-SYD-NZ-WLG where award space is available.
