As an SE I've been very lucky until the present in getting J awards on the LHR/YYZ route. I was surprised when trying to book LHR/YYX on 17th July when KVS showed J9,C9,Z9 for 3 of the flights that today but the SE desk said there were no seat it the award bucket. I thought with that amount of seats available the KK option should have opened a seat?
As an aeroplan agent, I can probaly shed some light onto this. My guess is, one of either two things happened. Either you fell on an agent who didnt receive his SE IKK training yet, and didnt realise what he was saying, OR, The agent didnt load you AE account number into our reservation system, therefore was not able to see J availability and didnt realise their mistake. I HIGHLY doubt there is no availability on that route on the 17th of july, but i will verify out of curiosity tomorrow.

My error was trying to get the award for an unaccompanied companion not realising the IKK was rightly only for when the SE member was accomanying them.
In the past I've had to debate for quite some time with agents to get them to give me IKK. They claim that there are only 2 seats per flight and play ignorant to what IKK is. Often have to escalate to manager. Mercedes Benz R-Class wins Red Dot Award::

No, you said that you have to be traveling with someone in paid revenue J for IKK in J and that is plain not true. You can use IKK yourself and travel alone. You can use IKK for yourself and 5 other people if they're all traveling with you.

If the Y cabin is oversold greater than the total J+Y capacity of the aircraft, IKK is not available.

That is the frustrating aspect the downgrading of IKK, when you can't buy a Y ticket for yourself and then use IKK for a companion.
What city is YYX a code of? I presume you were referring to YYZ?

Looking at the KVS availability, I see very few flights (if any) which would be oversold in economy (+ business). It is possible that a mistake was made, when you spoke to the SE agent. You might try availability of award seats in J class by trying to book through the web site, using your userid/password.
