Bumped passengers taking off:: Feb 16, 2007 Nearly 56000 air travelers were involuntarily bumped from a flight last year, and another 621000 were persuaded with cash or vouchers from http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/16/BUGQ8O5IUQ1.DTLHOME | Does anyone know what compensation should be provided by Air Canada for the involuntary bumping of a biz class passenger on an international flight (LHR to YVR)?
That's an airport snafu. At 15 minutes prior to sked, a flight should most definitely appear.
HTF: Has this actually happened to you or someone you know or you're curious as to what the comp is?
I was hoping to get bumped from J class on CP a few times and AC once but no luck. I asked a CP gate agent and they told me they never overbook for J pax. I presume AC does the same. AC 896 YVR-LHR on new year's day which was full, possibly overbooked in the back but they didn't ask for any front cabin volunteeers).
I've only heard of premium cabin overbooking on BA due to their guaranteed seat for elites (LHR-S. Africa where even P pax get bumped). FWIW, AC 896 YVR-LHR was overbooked (in Y) 21 August and they were asking for volunteers to go on CP 90 ( leaving/arriving <1 hr later) in return for C$200 compensation (not sure if it was cash or vouchers).
AC do not overbook J. The only time this situation will arise is a flight cancellation--which is a whole different beast.
A late arriving J pax could be shut out by upgrades after the passenger acceptance deadline, but you'd be out of luch in that situation, arriving after the flight is closed.
Gates do not generally show on AC cnx boarding passes because gates are often not assigned at the time the cnx boarding pass is issued.
Furthermore, gate assignments are frequently the subject of change.
At LHR, coupon lift takes place at the desk at the door of the gate (after secondary document inspection). If you fail to present yourself at that desk for coupon lift by the gate acceptance deadline (usually 10 minutes before departure), you are a no-show and your seat is subject to reassignment.
It's all there in the fine print.
The problem was not that the gate wasn't printed on the BP, they hardly ever are when coming on a connecting flight--the gate was not shown on the departure monitors, and this was at least 15 minutes before departure time.
In all the complaints that I have heard about AC, I have never once even heard a peep of involuntary bumping of paid biz class passengers. It has been my experience that they deliberately do not overbook so that this issue does not come up.
Perhaps with the CP/AC system incompatibility the problem has occurred. No idea what the compensation should be though.
LHR's system of "hot gates" (a la "hot bunks" on naval submarines) is a big point of confusion at that airport. But don't they usually post the gate by one hour before departure time?
FewMiles..
Last week I checked in 20 minutes before ZRH-YYZ. The flight was long closed but it was still no problem.
I don't think I have ever witnessed AC J bumping....

Thanks for the comments, folks. The deal was that I wasn't carried out of the plane or anything like that. I arrived in the departure lounge 15-20 minutes before departure time, to find that the gate wasn't listed. After I found the AC desk and got someone's attention, and she went to find out why the gate wasn't posted, she came back and said I had missed the flight (this was still before departure time).
The only reason I can think of why the gate would not be posted is that they assigned my seat to a standby/upgrade (and maybe some other folks' seats as well) and didn't want us arriving at the gate to find that our seats were gone.
To me, this is tantamount to denial of boarding, or involuntary bumping. Especially since the connecting flight on which I was arriving had, at my request, confirmed my arrival time, and I had asked for AC to be advised that I would arrive near departure time (this was confimed by cabin crew), but not late. So, I was there, but this is the first time I have ever heard of a gate not showing, unless for the reason I speculate.

They post the gate times as late as possible to keep you shopping.
