Research Voluntary Simplicity at Questia. http://www.questia.com/library/sociology-and-anthropology//voluntary-simplicity.jspHOME | As life gets more and more complex is there anyway we can slow down the potential psychological train wreck that were all sensing and seeing? Are we capable of simplifying our life: a voluntary simplicity if you will? With so much material stimulation, how is it possible to back off of the incessant need to keep up with the Joneses, Smiths, and whoever else we wish to compare ourselves? Comparison is suicide!
Henry Thoreau had great insight to our dilemma when he wrote, The price of anything is the amount of life that you have to pay for it. Ive given up too much of my life for things-stuff that I reallty didnt need and I bet youd agree that youve done the same.
Another wise man (Will Rogers) put this spin on the concept, Too many people spend money they havent earned, to buy things they dont want, to impress people they dont like. Sad, but true!
How many people spend large chunks of their days sitting in traffic for an hour or more to get to work, and then another hour to get home? Too many is the answer. We need to learn to live more consciously which means more purposefully. Too much of our lives is predicated upon reacting to the events and people and not enough to responding to the inner voice.
I believe that mankind is going to be semi-forced into a more simplistic life style over the next few years. Were burning up and destroying way too much of our human resources. How much easier it is for us to judge ourselves (I Cor. 11:31) than to have need for others (of which there are many) to judge. How much more joy there is when we voluntarily submit to what is right than needing to be brought under the law of right and wrong.
As we begin looking at 2008, what can you do to simplify your life- voluntarily? :-)
